The Tuality TCH Inpatient Geriatric project at Tuality Hospital was a 5-month long project that required the renovation of a large area within the hospital to move geriatric psychiatric patients into. This project required increased security of the area due to the occupancy surrounding the jobsite. The project was planned from the beginning with safety in mind. This was accomplished through detailed preconstruction planning as far in advance as possible.

Communication was critical throughout the project with hospital staff and trades. Starting with patient safety and infection control, we implemented containment trade worker entrance and managed material flow to ensure that construction traffic didn’t expose any risk to patients or staff. Fire-rated temporary barriers and detailed wayfinding tools were used to ensure staff, patients and visitors were able to navigate around the jobsite. A key area of detailed safety was to work carefully around the NICU, which was located below the jobsite. This required diligent communication and safety precautions such as Negative Air machines, due to the patients’ compromised immune systems.
